Battling Tees

Sunday 13th January, Thurrock u13s hosted Fullerians, hailing from the salubrious leafy lanes of South Hertfordshire. Sunday’s run out was an U13 development match where respective coaches rotated their squads, moving players about positionally during each of the four 15 minute quarters.

Early exchanges were pretty robust as both forward packs squared up to one another, man for man. First score not arriving until the eleventh minute, when the visitors’ scrum half, Jake Wood found centre Ben Mittleman running from deep to score the game’s first try.

Quarter 2, the second fifteen minutes saw many changes on both sides. It was the visitors, Fullerians, however who took control with Mittleman going over for his second try and a brace of tries being scored by Fullerians number 8 Anthony Kigobe off the back of successive scrums where the visitors pack were really starting to boss things.

Tees to their credit did not give up in this second quarter and taking the ball from his own 22, centre Zac De Breuk found speedster winger Abou Dikati who outpaced everyone to score and give his hard working Thurrock team mates some respite against the incessant Quarter 2 onslaugth. The score at half time was 5-20 so all was not lost.

Visitors, Fullerians were very quick off the mark in the second half with lock forward Jack Watson scoring twice and providing an assist for Jake Newman, moved from the right wing to out half and showing some deft touches, to run in a try. 35-5. Tees responded with a fine individual try from Shay Power who backed himself to score a wonder try 35-10.

In the final quarter of the game, with Tees u13s constantly being repulsed in the oppositions 22, it was ‘man of the match’, Mittleman who scored for Fullerians against the run of play to make it 40-10. This score seems to have broken any remaining resistance from Tees with the ever impressive Jack Watson running in his third and fourth tries to make the final score 50-10.
