derby victory over Brentwood

THURROCK 28
BRENTWOOD 7
Thurrock entertained their close rivals and the 3rd v 4th encounter lived up to its billing entertaining a very large crowd with some very exciting rugby. The hosts started much the better and looked dangerous with some foraging runs, and Brentwood paid the penalty at the breakdown giving Tim Blundell four opportunities to kick at goal 3 of which were successful and Thurrock went into 9-0 lead
The stiff breeze was across the field so little advantage to either side, Thurrock started to infringe at the breakdown to allow the visitors back into the match but Thurrock’s defence were in a mean mood getting turnovers at the critical time. From such a situation a break from inside his own 22 by Blundell got support from Tom Pool and he carried a further 25 metres to off load to Earl Gorman who scored under the posts, probably the best try scored at Oakfield this season, Blundell added the extra’s to lead 16-0
Brentwood came back in the last 10 minutes of the half and from a scrum five metres out, put Thurrock under pressure and the scrum collapsed the referee gave a penalty try converted by Bird but the other sting in the tail was yellow card for Thurrock prop Jarrett Crouch.
The second half began with Thurrock down to 14 men for the first 6 minutes and the introduction of player coach Ali McKenzie in the front row to help settle things down, as expected Thurrock were under immense pressure and only some fine last ditch defending kept them at bay, and they help out returning to full strength. As they game continued every player on the field were showing fantastic commitment but the killer blow came when forward Charlie Russo got the ball in open play after Thurrock put five phases together and kicked the ball high towards his brother Freddie who caught the perfect chip and powered over into the corner. As the game went into injury time Charlie Russo became try scorer as he ran round the defence to score under the posts, Blundell kicked the conversion which was the last kick of the match
Brentwood still stay 3rd and Thurrock 4th the gap now only 7 points, it was a big win for Thurrock and on the day deserved. This week Thurrock travel to Letchworth kick off will be 2.30
