undone by the catch and drive

THURROCK 27
COBHAM 33
Rugby returned to Oakfield on a sunny afternoon in front of a large crowd full of anticipation for the new season. Now playing in London 1 South following a summer transfer to balance the leagues, Cobham paid their first ever visit to Oakfield.
The visitors started the best and Thurrock was undone by a 5 metre catch and drive line out the first of 4 instances that Cobham were able, to breach the Thurrock line using this tactic with the conversion good, the visitors went into a 7-0 lead
Thurrock however came back, a try from Trent White and a penalty from Jake Barrand got Thurrock into the lead, but it was quickly lost as a copybook attack from Cobham resulted in a converted try.
Charlie Russo added a try, with Barrand adding the conversion to put Thurrock into a narrow lead at 15-14
The last quarter of the first half belonged to the visitors going over for 2 further converted tries to lead 28-15
Thurrock responded in great style at the beginning of the second half as Sonny Gay n his return to Thurrock scored near the posts with the conversion added by Barrand to reduce the deficit to 6 points. But against the run of play a loose ball was kicked through and the Cobham winger managed to get to the ball first to make the score 33-22
Earl Gorman added Thurrock’s 4th try sadly the conversion was missed and Thurrock chased the game to score a converted try to win. Deep Into injury time Barrand made a fantastic 50 metres break his offload to replacement Dan Ulph who was in support, but he was stopped agonisingly short of the line as time ran out. Thurrock got 2 points from this defeat, losing by less than 7 points and scoring 4 tries. There should be plenty of optimism for the coming season as no doubt the home side looked the more exciting only to be outdone by probably a few too many penalties.
