1ST HALF LEAD BLOWN AWAY
SCORELINE A LITTLE FLATTERING
Essex side Thurrock made the long journey to Camberley for the fifth match of the London 2 South campaign.
From the kick off Camberley started strongly the forwards soon making their impact. Slick passing by the backs saw the first try after 6 minutes with Ash Wright over out left and the try well converted by Smarty. The visitors soon fought back with some good attacking moves so that after 14 minutes they had converted two penalties both from Jake Barrand to be 7 – 6 down.
This spurred Thurrock on and they saw due reward after 20 minutes as a clever chip ahead saw the back row Joss Nunn outpace the defence to score in the corner the try not converted. Camberley then took some territory control to see a penalty score by Smarty to leave a 10 – 11
Despite useful attacking by Camberley there were errors by both sides those by Cam leading to stubborn defence needed as Thurrock used these to advantage. The half ended at 10 – 11 with Thurrock more attacking and Camberley defending so the visitors just meriting their narrow lead.
A different picture as soon as the second half was under way. In just three minutes the lead was taken again as fine handling by the backs from good possession saw Ash Wright over for his second try converted by Smarty. After eleven minutes a great scrummage surge saw Cam eventually foiled on the line but the scrum taken from the penalty ward and number eight Mac scored. No conversion so a useful scoreline of 22 – 11.
Half way through and after a penalty miss for Cam a magnificent break by Oyoni then pass to flying hooker Dylan and over he went with the neat conversion by Smarty and it was 29 – 11. A few more minutes and low and behold it was another try for Dylan. Good ball by Voighty form a line out then a great kick ahead down the right and there was Dylan over again. Another good conversion by Smarty and at 36 – 11 and with fifteen minutes left it was now all Camberley.
Six minutes to go and from another lineout the ball was gathered by Ash who broke through the defence to score under the posts duly converted by Smarty. To their credit Thurrock kept going and we saw some spirited late attacks. But Cam were not to be denied as on time a break down the right and then a slick pass so try for sub Charlie Hoggard saw 48 points on the board. Icing on the cake as Smarty converted his sixth and a final scoreline of 50 – 11.
A fine win with seven tries and six converted so Camberley retain third place in the table. A match of two halves with Cam taking the control after the interval to win comfortably with some good tries and movement throughout the second half. The 40 unanswered points after the interval seeing the crucial difference., this despite Thurrock going over under the posts twicw, only to drop the ball and see 14 points go begging,
