T's made to work hard to see off Cobham

Thurrock welcomed Cobham to Oakfield with a buoyant VP Lunch pre-match looking to make it 3 wins in a row. Both games between the sides last season had been high scoring spectacles in favour of Cobham and more of the same was hoped for, this time in T's favour.

Cobham started the better and from a line out close to the home sides try line, ball was secured and the visitors rumbled forward and scored a converted try.

Thurrock came back and when they couldn’t turn the pressure into points due to some rushed phases and giving away needless penalties, they took the opportunity to settle their early nerves through a Sam Stanley penalty.

Thurrock were slowly gaining the edge both up front and out wide with some fine team play. They managed to put some phases together to find Jake Barrand out wide. He still had a bit to do though, as he glided through 2 tacklers and out paced the covering defence to slide in for the try. Stanley was unlucky with the conversion as he hit the far post.

Thurrock continued to pile the pressure on and a great piece of individual skill from Sam Stanley saw him race in from 40 meters out. Spotting a gap in the visitors defence, he dummied inside before scything through and rounding the fullback to dive under the posts. He then slotted the easy conversion to bring an end to the half.

Cobham again started the second half the better and both sides traded penalties with Stanley slotting his 2nd of the match. Cobham knew they still needed to score twice, and were rewarded when a poor kick and chase allowed Cobhams winger to slice through T's defence and score another converted try to leave them just 1 point behind.

That set up an exciting final ten minutes, however Ts spent the majority of it in Cobhams half. A box kick from the Cobham scrumhalf went straight to Dan Stone, the ball was shipped to Jake Barrand and he again made light work of the opponents chase by beating defender after defender before being brought down by the last man. Out of nowhere, veteran fullback Darryl Worster ran a great support line to take the offload from Barrand and power over the line. Stanley's conversion increased the lead to 8 points. The final 5 minutes were poised as both teams chased the bonus point, Thurrock looking for the 4th try and Cobham looking for a losing bonus point. Unfortunately neither side could add to the score with the game finishing with a yellow card to Charlie Russo following what looked like a great hit.

A frustrating afternoon, but a great win against a team who had beaten Thurrock on both occasions last season and sees T's record their 8th victory of the season.

This week they travel to Westcombe Park (Orpington) for the last game of the year. Kick Off will be 2pm
