Thurrock returned to the top of Counties 1 Essex in emphatic fashion on Saturday 28th March, running in ten tries in a 60–31 victory over Romford at Oakfield.
Ts made a fast start and opened the scoring through Joss Nunn, who marked his 99th appearance for the club in style.
Crashing through the midfield and dragging defenders with him, the back-rower-turned-centre powered over, with Harry Reynolds adding the extras.
Romford’s ill-discipline proved costly early on, as two quick yellow cards left them down to 13 men. Thurrock capitalised immediately. Slick handling created space out wide for Rick Percival to finish, before Nunn was again at the heart of things—breaking the line and offloading neatly to Reynolds, who outpaced the covering defence to score and convert his own try.
Romford responded just before the break to reduce the deficit, but Thurrock still held a comfortable 19–5 lead at half time.
Thurrock wasted no time extending their lead after the restart. A dominant rolling maul fell just short, but Darryl Worster was on hand to dot down.
Romford hit back with a try out wide, but Ts continued to apply pressure. A sharp attacking move saw Jake Jones crash over in the corner following a neat ball from Alex Jones, though the centre was forced off through injury after scoring.
Playing with confidence, Thurrock’s next try was one of the standouts of the afternoon. Attacking from deep, the ball found Reynolds in his own half. The fullback showed pace and footwork to beat multiple defenders and score his second, converting once again.
Romford added their third around the hour mark, but the response from Thurrock was immediate. A strong scrum platform led to a clinical strike play, allowing Reynolds to complete his hat-trick—his 13th try in just five games—with another successful conversion.
Romford refused to go quietly, securing their bonus point through an excellent solo effort from their fly-half, who chipped ahead and regathered to score.
However, Thurrock’s attacking intent never dipped. A break in midfield from the returning Ben Stanley saw the ball worked from Caolan Watts-Adams to Nat Farrell, who surged down the wing. With support arriving, Worster crossed for his second of the afternoon.
From the restart, Ts struck again. Jack Cowman claimed the kick and linked with Worster, who powered forward before offloading to debutant George Morgan. The forward showed great composure to release Ahmed Aminu, who sprinted in to push Thurrock beyond the 50-point mark.
There was still time for one more. Farrell once again sparked the attack from deep, linking with Worster before a clever one-two and kick ahead saw Stanley win the race to touch down. Reynolds added the conversion to round off the scoring for Thurrock.
Romford had the final say with another well-taken individual try from their fly-half, who converted to bring the game to a close at 60–31.
Joss Nunn was deservedly named Man of the Match, delivering a trademark all-action performance in his milestone 99th appearance.
After a well-earned week off, Thurrock return to Oakfield on Saturday where they host Upminster, with kick-off at 3pm.
