Win against Chichester rates as best away win of the season

SATURDAY’s win rates as Thurrock’s best away performance of the season as the beat Chichester 28-20 to move up to 5th in London 1 South. They started the game on the front foot and never looked back after taking and early lead through a well taken drop goal from Sam Stanley.

Ts were soon on the attack again as a Dan Stone chip ahead was carried behind and dotted down by the home side giving Ts a 5m scrum. The ball was moved quickly to Henry Bird to side step his way past 2 defenders for his 2nd try in 2 games. Stanley was on target with the conversion.

Chichester are a solid side and started to get back into the game with some solid drives using their big forward pack. They gained a penalty just in front of halfway and their flyhalf duly slotted it to get the home side's first points of the afternoon.

Thurrock quickly cancelled that out as Stanley struck his own penalty to restore Ts ten point lead.

Thurrock continued to dominate possession and were once again over the try line through Niall Clifford. Ts were patient with the ball and moved it well from one side to the other before a lovely miss pass from Tom Pool found Clifford on the wing and he calmly stepped past the cover defence to slide in.

Chichester converted another long range penalty right on the half time whistle to make the score 18-6 at the break.

The second half became a very scrappy affair with neither team getting into any sort of rhythm and both sides collecting yellow cards. There was only 10 minutes in the whole half when both sides had a full complement. It was the home side that got the first try of the half. A catch and drive was well executed for a converted try to make it 18-13.

Thurrock again responded well and went straight back into the Chichester half. More patient build up, this time resulted in a try for Dylan Fearon as he rolled out of a would-be tackle and ran round to score under the posts. Stanley added the extras to extend Ts lead to 25-13.

Thurrock soon found themselves down to 13 men following yellow cards for Dan Carey & Rob Murphy and the.home side took full advantage. They scored their 2nd try of the game following a pushover try from a 5 meter and were looking good for a losing bonus point. But, as before, Thurrock went back into Chichester territory and won a penalty which Stanley put over to stretch the lead to 8 points.

Back to 15 for the last four minutes Thurrock kept the home side at bay and held on for what was a deserved win

League action takes a break this weekend with Thurrocks next game at Oakfield on 2nd March as they entertain promotion chasing Brighton with kick off 3pm.
