Even with their England players on 6 Nations duty, it’s a tough ask for a Championship team to play a Premiership outfit and a trip to Wasps in the Senior Cup is always difficult.
This was an error strewn game on bitterly cold day. I couldn’t feel my hands, so it’s no surprise the players dropped the ball too often.
Neither side covered themselves in glory in the first half, but Thurrock having, kicked well with the wind were definitely happier with 0-0 at half time.
Buoyed by their second half performance at Richmond last week, they hoped to push on in the second period.
Unfortunately, it was Wasps who got their act together and suddenly playing harder and faster, picked out mismatches in the defensive line and cut Thurrock to pieces with 3 trys in under 10 minutes.
Undeterred, Thurrock stuck to their values and kept playing. The scrum got on top and the lineout finally won some ball, but Wasps now had the wind behind them and kicked well.
Thurrock had a decent 20 minutes and should have scored, but Wasps always looked dangerous whenever they had the ball.
Wasps had the stronger bench and the constant supply of fresh legs made a difference going into the last 10.
2 more trys consigned Ts to a solid defeat at 33-0, but undoubtedly more than a few lessons were learnt in terms of what will be required if the T-Birds get into the Premiership next season.
